My name is Debra Freed and I am the founder of Adult Independent Services. I started this company because I know what it is like to face the many challenges of having a disabled loved one. Our daughter Lindsey was diagnosed with an intellectual disability while in elementary school. It was very upsetting to watch her struggle. She had an Individual Education Program (IEP) where she was placed in smaller class settings, given extra time to complete assignments, and was given special services. This continued through high school.  As she got older she was diagnosed with more disorders and we were very concerned about what her future would look like after high school.  Lindsey was very upset, depressed, and stressed about her life. She felt as if her life had no value. It was heartbreaking watching her deteriorate. During Lindsey’s sophomore year we started planning for the future. After a couple of years of research and an extremely lengthy application process, Lindsey was finally approved for adult-state provided services through DDD, (Division Of Developmental Disabilities). She is now living in an apartment, has therapy horseback riding, 24/7 supervision, as well as a job coach, and is employed! She feels she is living independently in an apartment (away from her parents) and feels her life now has value. This is why I formed Adult Independent Services, because I understand what it feels like to have a developmentally disabled loved one.
